images and words

imagines mundi means images of the world. But it also means images for the world. This blog is my attempt to take pictures not only of the world, but for the good and the sake of the world. Enjoy! Any feedback is appreciated.

Utah Nuclear Power at 8808 North Cove Dr.

On November 7, 2012 these six panels were installed on the south facing aspect of my garage roof to harness nuclear fusion, to invest in the well-being of the planet for my daughter's sake and to do the right thing. No need to build a dirty fission plant on the Green River and cater to special interests. No, solar energy is power to the people. Distributed power. Democratic power. The panels were installed by Dwelltek, a local firm here in Park City, which is owned by my first NOLS instructor, Jason Dittmer.  In the background to the East are the Uintas and of course, the rising sun, our ticket to reduced carbon use and a lighter energy footprint. Indeed this is a climate for change.

A Greenhouse against the coming cold.

Twilight in Hidden Cove, where a lone Greenhouse with its light fights off the cold for a few last tomatoes.

Daughter and Mother in the 'hood, aka Hidden Cove

We are fortunate to live in the 'hood, i.e. Hidden Cove, in my mind the best neighborhood in Summit County. Close to Park City, close to Salt Lake City, teeming with wildlife, trails everywhere and homes and neighbors that are unique, colorful and pure Utah.

Father and Son

Portrait by Jeffrey Louden

Jesse and Jason Dittmer at my house yesterday, October 8, 2012.  Jason was my instructor on my first NOLS course, an Outdoor Educator Course in the Absorakas of Wyoming in 1996. He is now the co-owner of Dwelltek,  www.dwelltek.com -  here in Park City, helping people save energy, money and love the planet.  I am having solar panels installed this month, because I have a 14 year old daughter whom I want to inherit a wonderful world.  And my electric bill will be $1/month. :)  JDL

Palimpsest in the Suburbs

Love the world. Work for nothing.
Take all that you have and be poor.
Love someone who does not deserve it.

Denounce the government and embrace
the flag. Hope to live in that free
republic for which it stands.

Wendell Berry
The Mad Farmer Manifesto
Photograph taken in Taylorsville, last Wednesday.

While it seems that the world goes crazy because of religion or its lack, that same world is full of unexpected beauty and grace and voices and images which speak for sane, life-giving action.

The Landscape of People

The Landscape of People + September 3, 2012 at LouLand Falls

The landscape we are privileged to see is not only mountains but relationships. Here are the flower girls at the wedding of one of my friends. Such a privilege.

Iron Canyon Aspens, A Community of Grace

Iron Canyon Aspens
Populus Tremuloides, the Aspen, leaves fluttering and creating a gentle sound in the fall wind. Aspens, also a sign of the beauty and mystery and connectedness of community, with its hidden roots.

Patriotism and Resistance

Denounce the government and embrace
the flag. Hope to live in that free
republic for which it stands.

Manifesto by Wendell Berry

These flags were posted at the intersection of Hwys 224 and 248  to remember the three thousand Americans who had by that time died needlessly in the Middle East in Iraq.  Sometimes people buy this image, thinking that it is "patriotic", i.e. supporting the military and the powers that be. But I took the photo to stand in solidarity against the powers that be and with all, American and Iraqi, who have suffered because of war.

Park City Love Shack

This "graffiti"  on HWY 40 near Home Depot was put up in the Spring and painted over with grey by the owner, but I was lucky to capture it.  What makes the landscape sacred is love.  As our mayor Dana Williams says, "My job is to increase the love."

Imagines mundi

I am privileged to live in Park City, in the mountains near the top of Parley's Pass, close to the Wasatch and the Uinta Mountains. Moose often walk pass my deck. I see the sun rise over the Uintas. If one is lucky enough to live in the mountains, one is lucky enough. And another saying is "when in doubt, go higher."  This blog will be dedicated to show and share some of the beauty of this landscape, of my and our home. The Latin, imagines mundi, means images of the world. I invite you to join me in the journey of seeing the beauty around us, that we might be "altitude balanced."
